Essential Road Trip Snacks + Giveaway

My family’s about to go on our first real-deal road trip. We’re hitting the dusty road to Western Nebraska and South Dakota for a week.

With two small kids, snacks are a necessity on a daily basis, but when there’s an extended car ride involved? They’re essential. However, I don’t want to keep buying junk from a gas station every time we’re hungry. I’m fine with some junk, but not only junk, know what I mean?

I’ve consulted Pinterest and I’ve consulted my stomach – together, we’ve come up with a plan.

A note from Kim: This post contains affiliate links. At no extra cost to you, making a purchase from an affiliate link means bloggers like me receive a small amount of money for recommending it. I only recommend things I would recommend to my friends – and usually they’re things I use, too. Thanks for your support!

Heads up: EssentialRoad Trip Snack Package Giveaway at the end of the post!

Road trip essentials:

Something fresh

Apples, grapes and/or bananas

String cheese

Something salty

Vic’s Popcorn – I go for the half-salt kind and you retain the flavor
Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers – Always a crowd-pleaser with small kids, and the variety pack is a good deal

Homemade Chex Mix

Almonds

Chips – Here’s my road trip indulgence. I hardly ever buy them otherwise, but I need chips on the road.

Jerky – Admittedly, I got this for nostalgia, since we used to have jerky on our canoe trips and since we’ll be canoeing the Niobrara, I couldn’t not bring something like Jack Link’s Original Turkey Jerky.

Something sweet

Sweet Cinnamon Protein Pretzels – These gluten-free snacks come in handy, single-serve bags from Tastefully Simple. My kids devour them.

MacroBar Minis – I was sent a box of minis from GoMacro MacroBars to try out, so I’m banking on at least one of the 11 flavors satisfying the kids (my money’s on peanut butter chocolate chip being a favorite). They’re a sweet treat that I don’t feel guilty about feeding my kids, all ingredients are organic, non-GMO project verified, kosher, gluten free and vegan certified.

Family Bars

Vanilla Bean Chai Snack Mix – I got some vanilla bean chai mix from Tastefully Simple, so I’m thinking of trying out this simple recipe.

Mandarin Orange Bread Mix – This is the only kind of baking I don’t mess up. 🙂

Things for a long haul

Fruit squeezies – I get a variety, so something like GoGo Squeez Applesauce or Del Monte Fruit Burst Squeezers works.

Homemade trail mix – I mix almonds, cashews and sunflower seeds with dried cranberries and the gluten-free Jalapeno Honey Mustard Protein Pretzels from Tastefully Simple (their flavor is too much for my kids when eaten alone). I usually add white chocolate chips but they’ll melt too easily for this trip.

JalapenoHoneyMustard

Add these spicy bad boys to your trail mix for a nice kick

Star Wars Fruit Flavored Gummy Snacks – I tend to avoid gummy and fruit snacks with the kids since they were the main cause of my son’s cavity. However, these can be a road trip indulgence for them.
