Couples Paint Class At Canvas And Cabernet

I suspected sip and paint classes weren’t just for girls night out for some time now, so I decided to test it out recently.

I signed Mr. Wonderful up for his first painting class with me – a couples painting class – at Village Canvas and Cabernet. Kathy at Canvas and Cabernet was so nice to invite us to try out one of their classes for Valentine’s Day. Canvas and Cabernet does these sorts of classes regularly.

This is a fun, low-key date night idea for you – no need to have painting experience to give it a shot. Having a shot before the class may actually help.

We ran into old friends there, and it made me think this could be a fun couples date too.

Good sports, they even let me take their pictures. They weren't really this serious the whole night.

About Our Painting Class

Our project was to draw cubist portraits of each other. The studio sketched the face in advance (thankfully), so all we had to do was add the color and special features to make it look kinda like your significant other.

I have zero drawing ability so this made the night for me – I could still be creative but I didn’t have to rely on my inability to draw lines correctly.

You get about 2 ½ hours to paint, and the instructor walks you through it all as she paints her own version in the front of the room.

Here are my friends again and their portraits of each other.

The experience was a pretty unique as far as dates go – everyone was really concentrating on their work but still having a good time joking with people around them. Everyday worries were blocked out of our minds as we sat pondering what odd color to paint an ear.

At the end of the night, we walked away with our works of art – a little memento from your night.

Tips for making the most of your night:

Get there ahead of the class start time so you can get settled in. We had to pick out paints, and of course, grab food and drinks. I always paint better with a drink.

All I need to paint, a Jones Bros. cupcake, a glass of wine and the paint.

The Valentine’s Day class was special and priced more than a typical class, so a bottle of wine and delicious food from Jones Bros. Cupcakes were included. Other classes, you get a drink ticket and additional beverages can be purchased, so bring a little cash for that. You can bring your own snacks in.

These couples paintings are designed so that they look good placed next to each other on a wall, and they good good apart. Check their calendar for upcoming couples classes, like a pretty cool looking Starry Night one this weekend.

Our kids were impressed with our mad paint skills, at least.

Comments

  1. I REALLY want to take one of these classes, though I think my boyfriend might prefer if I went with some of my girlfriends. We’ll see whether or not I can convince him to go 😉

    • My husband was skeptical of it too since I’ve done this in the past with friends and it seemed like a girls night out thing. With this couples class, though, it’s a safe bet that about half the class will be men, so there wasn’t any awkwardness.

  2. I’m with Hannah. I’ve been wanting to do one of these for awhile, but it may also be with girlfriends or co-workers instead of the husband. Although, I would love to convince him to give it a go.
